Today is the most important day of the Sagadawa Festival, it is celebrated on 15th day of 4th month by tibetan calendar on the full moon. This is the rasing of the Tarboche at the Mt Kailash on the way piligrims do kora around Holy Mount Kailash.

According to the Lhasa Tourism Bureau, in the first quarter of this year, Lhasa accumulatively received 660000 tourists and realized a tourism revenue of 929 million yuan.

In the first quarter, Lhasa’s tourism market was active and stable. The tourist reception volume increased greatly. Statistics showed that the reception capability of star-rated hotels has improved than last year.

Only during the Spring Festival and Tibetan New Year period, the tourism revenue reached 180 million yuan and 258 million yuan respectively. Tourists traveled mainly in the way of self-tour and group-travel.

Happy Yogurt Festival!

Today Lhasa in Tibet is celebrating the Yougurt Festival. The prelude of the Shoton Festival is the Buddha exhibition in Drepung Monatery and Sera Monastery.

“Sonton” in Tibetan means sour milk banquet. As Tibetan operas are performed and Buddha paintings are exhibited at this time, it is also called “Tibetan Operal Festival” or “Buddha Exhibition Festival.” The traditional way of starting the Shoton Festival is to show Buddha paintings. The main contents include Tibetan operas and gala parties, as well as wonderful yak racing and horsemanship display. The Shoton Festival starts on the 30th day of the 6th month according to Tibetan calendar (Later half of August) and lasts five days.

The sudden closure of Tibet from 18 to 23 June 2016

Dear partners and guests!

This morning the Tourism Office Bureu of Tibet reported that from 18 to 23 of June, the permits to visit Tibet will not be issued.

This applies to all forein groups which planed to visit Tibet on 18-23 of June.

In this situation, the foreign tourists who have planned a trip for June, may either leave Tibet before 17th of June, or the permits will be issued on a date after 24th of June.

What caused such an unexpected measure - closing Tibet from forein tourists only for 5 days - Tourism Bureu currently has not officially reported.

Today is a big tibetan holiday in honor of tibetan buddism protector Palden Lhamo - Baylamu (festival of the goddess Lakshmi).

Festival of defender Palden Lhamo (Baylamu, Shri Devi) is celebrated the 15th day of the tenth month of the Tibetan calendar. This is sort of "Women's Day", "Fairy Day". Day celebrating women. For 15 days before the holiday, women are actively go to monasteries to pray, gather for picnics, visit friends. 15 days before the holiday are considered to be difficult and dangerous for women's well-being. And at the feast day there are long queues in all temples of defenders of any kind. Men are also praying, because Baylamu (Lakshmi) - is the goddess of wealth. This is a very happy holiday, with songs and dances, with tea and feasts. Holiday for meeting friends and wild celebration.

Tibet winter is coming, the mountains are covered by the first thin cap of snow. Night temperatures are lower day by day. This week promises first night with temperatures below zero in Lhasa!

Mountain passes are covered with snow from time to time, travel in northern and western regions of Tibet becomes harder and much more extreme.

Tibet opens again after September 12

Dear guests!

Closing of Tibet will not last long. Guests applied for permits until August 28, will be able to come to Tibet after September 12!

Guests planning to apply after September 1, we recommend to plan your arrivals to Tibet after September 15, as with the opening of celebrations of 50th anniversary of the Tibet Autonomous Region government organizations will not work in normal mode, there may be delays in processing.

Nepal opened Everest for climbers

Tickets at the Potala Palace have increased in price up to 600-800 yuan and above for a single ticket. To get a ticket to Potala Palace Chinese tourists take place in the line in the evening and spend the night under the Potala Palace in the line. Or they can order the service - night stand in the line for the tourist, so the young people in Lhasa take this as a summer job.
